An occultist, and a magician (among MANY other things), Aleister wrote in his 1913 book Magick (Book 4), that a trained magician should learn to think backwards. Walking backwards, speaking backwards, and listening to phonograph records backwards. Of course, the Beatles, who used backmasking on a couple of their songs, and were falsely accused of using backmasking even more when they weren’t (see the “Paul Is Dead” hoax for more on that) put Crowley as one of the figures on the cover of their Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Led Zeppelin inscribed Crowley’s motto “Do What Thou Wilt” into the vinyl of Led Zeppelin III, and of course Ozzy Osbourne immortalized him with the song “Mr. Crowley”. Incidentally, the hexagram shape of the crossword is the symbol of the religion that Crowley founded, Thelema. The central concept of Thelema is discovering and following your True Will (which inspired the motto in Led Zeppelin’s inscription).
